Obituary of Gregory John Redmond

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things have passed away" (Revelations 21:4). AUBURN - Gregory John Redmond, 74, was called home by God on December 2, 2023 after an arduous battle with Alzheimers . Gregory was born on May 27, 1949 to Helen and Paul Redmond of Auburn, NY. Greg was a 1969 graduate of West High School, Auburn, NY. In addition to his time at West High, he spent two years at Saint Francis Preparatory Academy in Buffalo, NY where he excelled in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. Greg received a Bachelor of Science degree at SUNY Polytechnic Institute (formally SUNY Utica/Rome), and continued to pursue his Master's degree at Syracuse University with a focus in Forensic Psychology and Criminology study. Greg devoted almost 39 years serving the State of New York as a Correction Officer. During his many years of service he was an active member of the Correctional Emergency Response Team. His focus revolved around hostage negotiations. He was a Senior Officer in the Crisis Intervention Unit and an avid supporter for fair labor relations and management through his involvement in NYSCOPBA. Greg ended his career as a Lieutenant and will be fondly remembered as Lt. Kawasi. Outside of work, Greg was a huge sports and physical fitness enthusiast. He played softball, volleyball, and basketball in local city leagues. He even received his personal training certification and worked at the YMCA for many years. He loved to play golf and was a member at both Dutch Hollow and Highland Golf Courses; participating in weekly men's leagues and various tournaments. If Greg was not on the court, diamond, or links, he could be found hiking the peaks in the Adirondack Mountains. He mindfully appreciated the beauty of nature and will forever be remembered by the saying, "the mountains are calling and I must go". Greg is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marcia Stevens Redmond, as well as his three daughters: Kristen (Matteo) Bartolotta, Katherine Sedorus and Karen (Stanley) Cuff. His love of life, devotion to God and family are passed down to his grandchildren: Ailise, Amelia, Ariana and Adelyn Bartolotta, Jackson and Isabella Sedorus, and Margaret and Mary Grace Cuff. Greg is also survived by his siblings: Paula (Gregg) Lawson, Paul (Cindy) Redmond and Sharon (Kevin) Burke; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Greg was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Paul Redmond and his nephew, Christopher Lawson.
